With its motorised fader and tactile controls, does AlphaTrack beat mixing with a mouse? Keith Gemmell gets hands-on...

One of the most appealing aspects of DAW-based recording are the integrated mixing facilities available in audio-production software. But let’s face it: dragging faders and adjusting pan controls with a mouse is a tedious business (and if you happen to spend long hours mixing, there’s also the looming threat of RSI). The obvious solution is to buy a control surface with motorised faders – but that’s easier said than done, because if you don’t have the desk space or the money for something like a Mackie Control, what else is there?
