The conventional piano keyboard layout is around 200 years old and few have dared to reinvent it. Paul von Janko, a Hungarian pianist and engineer, had a crack at it in 1832, but despite Franz Liszt’s prediction that ‘this invention will have replaced the present piano keyboard in 50 years’ time’, it never caught on.
