Guitarists have been at the forefront of electric music since Les Paul crafted the first solid-body electric guitar in 1941. Since then, developments in amplification and effects have enabled guitarists to achieve a wide variety of sounds. However, when it comes to synthesizers and samplers, guitarists have been left behind, while keyboard players have been spoilt with a wealth of different options. When they were first released in the early 80s, guitar-to-MIDI converters suffered from tracking and latency problems that made the instruments almost unusable in any conventional sense.
