Basic Sampling

A solid grounding, explained in the best possible way, in the massive subject of sampling.

Review by Nigel Lord

Basic Sampling book coverPaul White’s renowned throughout the industry for writing books on the subject of music technology – hence the ‘UK’s most prolific hi-tech author’ accolade. It could be something to do with his ability to explain the tools of hi-tech music creation with greater skill than just about any other writer in the country.

The ‘pocket guide’ format of Sanctuary’s Basic series makes this, by necessity, a bare-bones examination of the subject. But for musicians looking for quick answers, it’s an approach with a great deal to recommend it, particularly as none of the related technology (such as MIDI and sequencing) has been side-stepped or omitted – only summarised.

That said, it’s difficult to explain the inclusion of a four-page list of General MIDI voices and find no mention of (for example) the law and sampling. Possibly the ‘Introducing MIDI’ section (of which it is a part) is a standard inclusion in the Basic series – which now encompasses some sixteen titles covering everything from scales to keeping your kit in good condition.

The different methods of sampling currently available make it difficult to produce a ‘one size fits all’ guide to the sampling process itself, but this book steers around the problem admirably, taking full advantage of the extensive crossheadings and comprehensive glossary of terms. Got to be worth a fiver of anyone’s money.
