Beat Making on the MPC1000 by MPC-Tutor
Guides that show you how to be creative with something rather than just how the buttons work tend to focus on software – and specifically DAWs – rather than hardware.
Spotting a gap in the market, MPC-Forums.com founder Andy Avgousti has written BeatMaking On The MPC1000, a collection of 51 tutorials for the MPC1000 that assume no prior technical knowledge and aim to show you how to make better beats and work with samples on your AKAI.
Initially covering the basics of the box itself, it quickly moves on to sampling, editing, kit building, effects and sequencing. It’s thoughtfully structured and written in concise yet authoritative language, with plenty of screenshots of the MPC1000’s display to help you. Descriptions of the tiny icons it uses are particularly welcome.
Each of the tutorials is backed up by a folder containing data such as audio, MIDI and project files, so you can actually follow the steps for yourself.
Despite this the download remains a modest 32MB and although £24 might seem a lot for an e-book, a product that has no physical form and no significant distribution costs, this is a highly specialised subject, so each of the 269 pages of the PDF is concerned only with the MPC1000.
What’s more, it covers an awful lot of ground, so there’s plenty here for users of all levels, from beginners to experts.
8/10 Verdict: A niche subject and maybe a little pricey for an e-book, but if you have an MPC1000 and don’t own this, you’re probably not getting the most out of it.
Score: 8/10
