With all the attention lavished on the quality (and price) of digital converters, you’d think they were the only prerequisite of a professional digital recording. Connect two or more digital devices together, however, and the digital word clock becomes just as important as the converters at either end of the equation. The word clock’s role of dividing and synchronising the time divisions of a digital recording is vital – even with the best converters, a poorly clocked converter can result in an edgy, distorted recording. Where a number of devices form a word clock chain (one device sending word clock to another) the problems get worse, with the last device in the chain having little chance of receiving anything coherent.
