Getting sample loops to work together used to be an awkward and time-consuming business. Then along came Propellerhead Software with ReCycle, a program that made it a whole lot easier to change the pitch and/or tempo of sample loops by analysing them and breaking them down into small segments, or slices. This approach also made it possible to change the rhythmic feel of a loop, and even to reconfigure it entirely, by triggering the individual samples from MIDI notes. ReCycle has established a solid niche for itself as the must-have tool for sample loopists everywhere. However, last year a small company called Bitshift Audio became David to Propellerhead’s Goliath when it released pHATmatik PRO. Bitshift’s program uses the same underlying sample-slicing approach as ReCycle for loop manipulation and reconfiguration, but integrates it into a virtual instrument that can be used within any VST2.0-capable host program. It adds a synthesizer section, plus the ability to run up to 16 loops simultaneously within a single instance of the instrument.
