Boss BR-1600CD
Computers offer musicians a myriad of recording possibilities, but standalone recorders still have considerable appeal – as Bob Dormon discovers with the Boss BR-1600CD.

When it comes to music, a computer can be a jack of all trades – and master of many – but that certainly doesn’t rule out the option of using purpose-built alternatives such as a standalone recorder. The new Boss BR-1600CD is a case in point – and if nothing else proves that progress hasn’t stood still in the development of new hardware devices, however much the spotlight is currently on software design. It features a 24-bit, 16-track studio (with 256 virtual tracks), eight mic inputs, rhythm programming, numerous built-in effects for guitar, vocals and mastering, plus a CD-writer.
Score: 7
