Roland BR-600
Smaller than most notebook computers and packed with features, can an 8-track digital recorder this small really deliver the goods? Keith Gemmell finds out who’s BOSS...
Price: £299.00
Manufacturer: Roland

The cost of laptop recording is dropping all the time, but for many strapped-for-cash guitarists, quality mobile recording remains frustratingly out of reach. Recently, though, several well-known Japanese companies have begun manufacturing portable digital recorders with removable CompactFlash cards. Aimed specifically at guitarists, Roland’s latest 8-track – the BOSS BR-600 – is such a device, but it also includes a stack of effects, amp modelling, a drum machine and USB data-transfer capabilities.
Score: 8

Great review, just what I needed to read before purchasing one.
I guess it could also be used as a practice amp with headphones and if you accidentally create something new you can just hit record and play it again. Or even for warming up back stage before a gig.
I'm sold on the BR600 already but it would have been nice to have had a 1Gb CF card (only £6.95) or at least a PSU (£19.00) supplied with it as my local dealer doesn't have a PSU in stock and doesn't ever stock CF cards. Why do company's make you run around looking for accessories that should be supplied in the box, as replacing the batteries every 6-7 hours isn't very environmentally friendly is it. This sort of thing really annoys me but I guess getting 128Mb CF card is better that no card at all, at least I can try it when I get home before I have to go out again to find a PSU or stock up on batteries before sitting down to a serious recording session.
