Ten years after Yamaha introduced the VL-7 synth, it appears that the age of physical modelling synthesis may finally be upon us. With Applied Acoustic Systems’ String Studio and Logic Pro 7’s Sculpture both released in 2005, an increasing number of developers are turning away from re-creating past glories and looking forward to a new generation of acoustically inspired synthesizers. Excitingly, physical modelling represents the opportunity to unlock the wonders of the acoustic world inside the domain of your audio sequencer. No more oscillators, filters and LFOs, but a real instrument, with all its delicate quirks, ready to be played.
