Vocal synthesis seems to be experiencing a mini-renaissance in recent months, with plug-ins being released by Zero-G (Lola, Leon and Miriam from the Vocaloid series) and now VirSyn. In an effort to achieve a realistic vocal sound, the current approach seems to involve using samples as the raw material – and given the results delivered by the Vocaloid plug-ins, this seems to be a valid choice. An alternative method – and the one adopted by VirSyn – is to use pure synthesis to re-create the effect of speech and or singing; a possibly less realistic approach, but one that offers a lot more potential for abstract sound design. Interestingly, Cantor follows in a line of additive synthesis plug-ins released by VirSyn and further develops the resynthesis tools demonstrated in Cube 1.5.
