Take a look at the average project studio: a computer-based DAW, a couple of active monitors, a mic preamp, maybe a DAT machine… All essential bits of gear, to be sure, but patching these devices together and working in a professional way with them can be difficult. We’ve all been there: setting a mic up in the spare bedroom and resorting to shoutback rather than talkback to communicate with your ‘control room’, or desperately reaching to turn down an active speaker as a computer belts out an unpleasant tone. Previously, the only realistic answer to these problems has been to buy a full-scale professional console and make use of its master section to provide talkback, 2-track auditioning and monitor switching. But what if you’re short of space – and money?
