Recalling the classic sound of 480Ls and EMT plates, IK Multimedia’s CSR reminds us that good reverb isn’t always about convolution, as Mark Cousins finds out.

The world of plug-in reverb has certainly fallen in love with the concept of convolution, with several recent examples of convolution reverbs demonstrating that this technology is coming on in leaps and bounds. But if you consider the quality of most reverb plug-ins found in a typical DAW, though, it’s no surprise to see why users are ditching the integral reverb for the sonic variety and natural warmth exemplified by the convolution approach. Pure digital reverb is more CPU-efficient and editable than convolution reverb, but it’s notoriously difficult to design and implement, which goes a long way to explain why the likes of Lexicon and TC Electronic still dominate the pro-studio market.
