Cubase has arguably reigned supreme among sequencers for the best part of 14 years, and its popularity shows no sign of abating as it continues to attract hordes of devoted users. Looking back, it’s easy to understand why. 1991 saw the introduction of Cubase Audio, the first sequencer to combine MIDI and audio recording. In 1996, Cubase VST, the first software studio with real-time EQ, effects, mixing and automation, was born. And – although they’re taken for granted now – in 1999, VST Instruments completely revolutionised the world of audio production.
