Historically, Steinberg has concentrated its efforts on making software rather than hardware, with Cubase being the best known of its products. There have, however, been a few forays into the hardware market, notably the Houston controller, but developing its VST format and other software has tended to take precedence. Recognising the current trend for FireWire and USB interfaces, Steinberg has decided to get in on the act and create an integrated Cubase system incorporating Cubase SL 2.0.0 – the company’s mid-range sequencer – and the new MI|4 USB audio and MIDI interface. The idea, of course, is that as it makes both the hardware and the software, the overall result is better performance and stability.
