There are many plug-ins and audio processors that offer some form of audio magic, whether it’s to rescue a poorly recorded instrument or to polish an under-performing mix. Common to all of these devices is some form of psychoacoustic trickery, adapting the audio in subtle (or extreme) ways to increase our relative enjoyment of it, from the extra sparkle provided by Aphex’s Aural Exciter to the increased body and loudness provided by Sonnox’s Inflator. Joining this long list is the latest version of BBE’s Sonic Maximizer, now available in all the leading plug-in formats thanks to the work of Nomad Audio.
