While it’s easy enough to match the kind of computing muscle you’ll find in any dedicated recording facility, there are other crucial factors that often separate the average project studio from a well-equipped professional studio: good room acoustics, a comprehensive patching system and – most importantly – a dedicated console. Recording and mixing a session ‘in the box’ (in other words, using just an audio interface and your DAW’s software mixer) may work perfectly adequately, but there’s no denying the wow factor of seeing and working in a control room equipped with a proper console. Not only do you benefit from trading a mouse for physical controls, but you also get the other crucial components – like monitoring control, inserts and routing – that make professional studios such a great environment to work in.
