Softube revives an 80s VCA signal processor with some real punch. Mark Cousins packs his explosives.

The world of recording is littered with obscure and unusual signal processors. Some of these units gain ‘cult’ status, while others fester unused and neglected at the back of a studio. Although maybe not as famous and alluring as certain other units - such as an original Fairchild compressor -Valley People’s Dyna-mite signal processor has attained cult status for its unique approach to limiting and expansion. Not surprisingly, the original 80s units are somewhat hard to come by, so it’s pleasing to note that Swedish company Softube has developed this plug-in version, faithfully modelling the Dyna-mite’s distinctive and unusual dynamic qualities.
