Shure’s E Series of in-ear monitors are a development of the company’s work in personal on-stage monitoring. During the 1990s, Shure, along with a number of other manufacturers, perfected the art of designing personal monitors for singers, musicians and other performers on-stage. Because they fitted snugly inside the ear (top performers had their own sets designed specifically for the particular shape of their ears), they rejected unwanted noise from outside, enabling users to listen to the sound of their fellow musicians at lower – and safer – levels. And because they were small they could be effectively hidden from the TV cameras – important in an era when images of stars are beamed onto giant screens during gigs and when every other concert tour seems to be recorded for a DVD box set.
