Given the proliferation and sophistication of digital synthesis and the tools now available to manipulate and create audio, it’s somewhat surprising that many of us still hanker after the kinds of sounds produced by considerably older technology, whether it’s the rusty electromechanical pickups of an electric piano, the tonewheels of a Hammond organ or the grinding tape loops inside a Mellotron.
