Ever since MOTU released the world’s first FireWire audio interface, the 828, various manufacturers have entered the market, all offering their own unique spin on the FireWire recording system. However, one constant theme has been the competitive pricing of the majority of interfaces – sometimes leading to a sacrifice in the number and quality of preamps or, even worse, the AD/DA conversion. In that respect there’s a clear dividing line between many prosumer audio interfaces and the audiophile quality of pro-end converters and systems such as Pro Tools HD, potentially limiting the success of critical tasks like mastering using FireWire interfacing.
