The performance and design of nearfield monitors has improved significantly in the last ten years or so, with many models delivering a level of sonic detail that far exceeds their retail price. However, what this rise in monitoring performance has highlighted is the real problem that lurks in most of our studios – not in the quality of our speakers, but in the acoustics of the room itself. Couple this with the fact that a growing number of professional users are now actively choosing to mix from home rather than hiring a dedicated facility and you can see why room acoustics – and the detrimental effect it has on our monitoring experience – is increasingly becoming a major concern in the recording industry.
