AKAI EWI USB
At last: an affordable wind controller with a USB port and customised sampled sounds. Keith Gemmell breathes easy.
Price: £299.00
Manufacturer: AKAI

Considered by many to be the most expressive MIDI controller available, AKAI’s EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) has been slowly growing in popularity since the 1980s. The late Michael Brecker was an early exponent of the instrument and if you Google his name and the letters EWI together you’ll find some incredible video examples of just how expressive these controllers can be. He played the pro version, the EWI 4000s, which costs in excess of £500, but AKAI now makes a scaled-down model, the EWI USB. It ships with Garritan sounds and AKAI claims it’s suitable for beginners and pros alike. So, just how easy is it to play?
Score: 8
