Roland Fantom-S Synthesizer
Roland has released a new version of its Fantom synth/workstation, but is it the machine to put the company back on top? Mark Jenkins looks for spirits in the material world…
Price: £1,799.00
Manufacturer: Roland

Many people felt that the original Fantom didn’t live up to its potential and lost considerable ground to its near rivals the Yamaha MOTIF and Korg Triton series, both of which offered powerful sampling options. So it comes as no surprise to hear that the new Fantom-S has been the subject of a pretty extensive re-think, with provision for external sampling and the re-sampling of internal sounds, as well as velocity and aftertouch-sensitive illuminated trigger pads. These place it in contention with the now hard-to-obtain MPC range of Akai sampling drum machines.
Score: 8
