Native Instruments FM8
NI’s FM7 has been revamped and re-released as the FM8, but just how deep do the changes go? Mark Cousins finds out.

Yamaha’s mighty DX7 was one of the most defining synthesizers of the 80s, with its bright, sparkly sound forming the perfect counterbalance to the dearth of ‘muddy’ analogue synths available at the time. As always, though, fashions change, and once musicians started to miss the warmth and temperamental charm of their old analogue beasts, the DX7 fell out of favour. But this was a shame, because the DX7’s sound-generation system – FM synthesis – still had plenty to offer. It took the wisdom of Native Instruments to finally take on the FM mantle, producing the excellent FM7 – a faithful reconstruction of the DX7, but also an updated take on the wonders of FM synthesis.
Score: 9
