Review by Nigel Lord.
As if to highlight the rapid pace of software development, PC Publishing’s latest book, Get Creative With Cubase SX/SL, is a full revision of its earlier Get Creative With Cubase VST title written by MTM’s very own Keith Gemmell, whose review of Cubase SX 2.0 appears in this very issue!
Ah well, it’s good to know our experts are kept busy, and no one can doubt Keith’s expertise as a Cubase user.
Like the previous book, the new title is subtitled Composing And Arranging With Cubase SX/SL, which gives you some indication of the kind of coverage it offers. Keith uses his parallel talents as composer and arranger to explain the creative process involved in producing music for pop and dance styles as well as computer gaming, TV, radio, advertising and multimedia presentations.
Keith is clearly most comfortable taking the score-based approach to creating music, and although this won’t suit everyone, there’s usually a Key Edit grid alongside every Score Edit screen that appears, so most people should be kept happy.
Get Creative With Cubase SX/SL is essentially a project-based book, with a wealth of examples from rock’n’roll piano to a football theme. As Keith points outs, you don’t need to complete all the projects to learn from this book; simply using the examples should provide a valuable insight into the creative process involved in working with Cubase.
8/10: Verdict: Other books highlight the technology behind Cubase, this one explains the creative process.
Score: 8/10
