When it comes to re-creating acoustic instruments using software, sample-based technology is still, for the most part, streets ahead of synthesis in terms of realism and the ability to generate an expressive performance. At the forefront of such sampled sounds is the East West/Quantum Leap partnership, offering a good selection of orchestral and acoustic virtual instruments. Among the latest releases are Goliath, boasting an array of instruments, and SD2, focusing on cinematic acoustic percussion.
