Simply put, HALion 2.0 is a software sampler. However, it does almost everything that a top-notch traditional studio sampler does, which means that it’s a tremendously powerful soundmanipulation tool and one of the most important instruments in modern music production. Specifically it’s a VST instrument, so it needs to be used from within a VST-compatible piece of host software such as Cubase or Logic. This symbiotic relationship brings both advantages and disadvantages, but what’s certain is that HALion is a fantasy monster of a machine and worthy of very close examination.
Score: 9
