No stranger to the virtual workstation, Steinberg gave us Hypersonic in 2004 followed by Hypersonic 2 in 2006. Both were fashioned after classic hardware synths like the Korg M1 and featured a huge variety of sounds. Hypersonic 2 was discontinued a while back, but the idea has been revived, modernised and expanded with the arrival of a new VST workstation: HALion Sonic. It contains over 1,200 sounds created in conjunction with Yamaha (totalling 12GB of synths, hybrid and acoustic instruments) and is powered by a new VST 3 audio engine.
Score: 9
