How to do Everything with GarageBand by Emile Menasche.
Apple’s entry-level sequencer has been around for about a year now, and How To Do Everything With GarageBand is the latest in the inevitable list of missing
manual-style books that follow in the wake of any major software release. And let’s face it, most of it is quite complicated and books that ease the learning curve are usually welcome.
The book is divided into four sections. Part 1 provides an overview of the program – its basic features and so on. Part 2 gets into the nitty gritty of using the software to make music. Part 3 covers mixing and exporting songs to iTunes, as well as offering tips on song writing and production. Part 4 deals with hardware, additional software, tech tips and troubleshooting.
The problem facing any author writing about GarageBand is that the program is very intuitive to use and easy to understand in the first place. However, Emile Menasché
rises to the challenge and tells us how to do just about everything that GarageBand is capable of in a friendly, chatty style.
However, some aspects of the book are confusing. For example, chapter 1 is called Get Started With GarageBand – but so is chapter 2. And although we’re told to go online for the missing Appendix C (containing setup diagrams) there’s no mention of the URL.
But despite these and other anomalies, if you’re new to recording and need a thorough breakdown of GarageBand and help with using it, this book’s for you.
6/10 Verdict: This book will be helpful to GarageBand users who find the online help a little too limiting.
Score: 6/10
