Those readers old enough to remember programs like Dr Who in the 60s and 70s may recall occasions where a strange black object would appear in the picture above the actors’ heads and then quickly vanish. It was, of course, the overhead mic attached to a boom and operated by some luckless technician whose job it was to follow the actors around and get it close enough to pick up the dialogue – but not so close that it ended up in shot.
