As any acoustic guitar player can tell you, standard magnetic pickups and piezo undersaddle bugs don’t even come close to reproducing a natural or convincing acoustic guitar tone. In 2003, Taylor launched its revolutionary Expression System, combining a magnetic humbucking pickup beneath the end of the fingerboard with two magnetic sensors that work in a similar way to moving-coil microphones. The stroke of genius behind the idea is that the soundboard acts as the diaphragm. To blend these signals together, guitar-makers Taylor needed a top-quality preamp/equalizer/mixer – and who better to design it than hardware guru Rupert Neve?
