Kenton Electronics has been in the business of making ‘glue’ hardware ever since its founder – keyboard player John Price – added MIDI capability to his Oberheim OBX synth back in 1986. Spin Doctor is the latest addition to the company’s Control Freak series of hardware controllers and is positioned as an entry-level product. The basic idea is that it gives you 16 knobs that can produce just about any MIDI message you might possibly need to control another MIDI device. The concept is very simple, you twiddle one of the knobs on the front of the unit and the movement is converted by the Spin Doctor into MIDI controller data. In effect, it enables you to add direct control to your music production system – sort of a general-purpose front panel.
Score: 8
