Creating the ‘ultimate sampler’ has always been considered the ultimate goal, arguably because, unlike synthesizers, it makes little sense in operating and running more than one system. In the days of hardware sampling, for example, the ubiquitous AKAI sampler ruled the roost, despite strong competition from the likes of E-mu. In respect to the software sampler, GigaStudio once set the standard for others to follow, but in recent years, the mighty Kontakt has slowly but surely taken its place. Of course, aspects such as cross-platform compatibility (GigaStudio still remains PC-only, with the promised GVI Mac yet to fully materialise) and third-party libraries have been a big part of its success, but it’s the sheer depth and flexibility of Kontakt’s sound engine that have arguably been the most decisive factors over the competition.
