Native Instruments Kontakt 4
Do more sounds and Expression Technology help Kontakt 4 retain the soft-sampler crown? Mark Cousins finds out.

With Tascam’s GigaStudio now AWOL, it seems that Kontakt has rightly become the king of software samplers, thanks to a loyal set of users and an ever-expanding sound library. However, despite taking the prize for ‘most popular software sampler’, it would certainly be unwise for Native Instruments to become complacent, especially given that a growing number of sample developers have developed their own 64-bit sample engines, festooned with innovative features and beautifully designed user interfaces. Of course, a ‘ROMpler’ will never replace a fully fl edged software sampler, but the immediacy of such systems could be seen as a threat to Kontakt’s market dominance.
