Shure KSM9
If you feel that your live vocal mic is letting you down, maybe it’s time to consider a change. Huw Price picks up the KSM9.
Price: £625.00
Manufacturer: Shure
Website: http://www.shure.co.uk

It looks like any industry-standard Shure live vocal microphone, so you might be wondering why we are bothering with the KSM9 at all. Well, beneath that understated charcoalgrey exterior lurks a bona fide condenser with switchable polar patterns – cardioid and hypercardioid. Sensibly, for a mic that’s designed to be hand-held, the pattern switch is tucked out of harm’s way. To get at it, simply unscrew the grille housing and there it is under the 3/4-inch dualdiaphragm capsule. Both diaphragms are made from gold-layered mylar, and they feed a Class A discrete preamp with a transformerless output stage. Shure claims non-existent crossover distortion and minimal harmonic distortion.
Score: 7
