As any engineer will testify, not all limiters are designed to be as sweet and transparent as some audio purists would prefer. Take Shure’s Level-Loc PA compressor, for example: originally built in the 60s as a crude levelling device, it was subsequently adopted by the likes of Tchad Blake as a form of extreme drum compressor – perfect for a ‘lo-fi' drum squeeze. Inspired by the Level-Loc sound, Standard Audio has developed the Level-Or, designed as part limiter, part distortion unit and certainly never intended for audiophile mastering.
