Ableton Live 5
The all-in-one production and performance phenomenon reaches the fab Five. Markkus Rovito takes a break from warping to tell you all about it.
Manufacturer: Ableton

Even Ableton probably didn’t see it coming. When the company released the first version of Live in 2001, the software ingeniously filled a niche for remix and dance artists who loved the program’s real-time elastic treatment of audio, dropping in loops on the fly that conformed to the overall set’s tempo and key for musical performances or spontaneous recording sessions. Live’s unique interface also made a splash: you could build tracks in the traditional linear way in the Arrangement view or launch groups of clips on the fly in the Session view. A single, highly configurable window held all of the components and you could expand or collapse areas such as the Clip Overview and mixer section as required.
