Logic Pro 8 Tips and Tricks by Stephen Bennett
PC Publishing’s Tips And Tricks series of tutorial books continues to grow with the release of Ableton Live 7 Tips And Tricks and this, its Logic Pro 8 offering.
Aimed squarely at those who are either new to the program or at an intermediate stage in their understanding of Apple’s Logic, the book is broken down into ten core chapters that take you from the installation and setup process through to using Logic as a mastering tool. The usual suspects – recording, plug-ins, workflow, editing, mixing and so – fill in the middle.
Rather than bother the reader with great swathes of text, each chapter is broken down into bite- sized chunks – typically just a paragraph or two, although a few swell to as many as three pages. It’s quick and easy to dip in and out of – ideal if you’re looking to fill a bit of time and increase your basic knowledge; not so great if your idea of a software guide is something that will lead you step- by-step through a project.
Author Stephen Bennett clearly knows his stuff and presents his knowledge in a precise, no- nonsense manner, illustrated throughout with black-and-white screengrabs. While the power user is likely to be somewhat underwhelmed by the book, it’s a great starting point for newcomers or those who feel their Logic know-how has become a little rusty. And at under a tenner, it’s something of a bargain.
7/10 Verdict: A good way for newcomers or intermediate Logic users to learn the basic facts about the program, but it might be a touch lightweight for power users.
Score: 7/10
