The release of the original Mellotron back in the early 1960s represented new heights in music technology, being the first and only realistic way of re-creating acoustic instruments. It was arguably also the first example of what we now call a sampler, although rather than using RAM or hard disk streaming like the samplers of today, it generated its sound from racks of pre-recorded tape.
