When Apple gave birth to Mac OSX, many of us were faced with the choice
of either leaving behind a favourite bit of software or having to
spread our work across two operating systems. U & I’s MetaSynth was
just such an application: a favourite tool for many, MetaSynth was left
pining in the realms of OS9 until late March, when French developer
Eric Wenger announced that an OSX version was finally ready for
release. For the uninitiated, MetaSynth is a sound-design tool that is
best known for making use of an image pixel’s parameters to manipulate
sound. In 2002, Richard James (better known as Aphex Twin) set the
digital music community buzzing when he used the product to embed his
devilish grin in one of his tracks. Even the cutting-edge sound
engineers behind The Matrix deployed Wenger’s creation as one of their
key audio tools.
