Analogue consoles… don’t ya just love ‘em? Lotsa knobs so you can tell at a glance exactly what’s going on. Given Yamaha’s expertise in the digital domain you might wonder why it bothers. The fact remains that compact analogue consoles such as the new MG16/6FX are both flexible and relatively inexpensive. As such, they prove to be excellent choices for those beginning a foray into recording or in need of a basic live mixer. Indeed, like many of its rivals, the Yamaha MG16/6FX endeavours to cater for both scenarios but has to make some compromises along the way – although the built-in digital effects unit with 16 preset reverbs and the four group outputs appear attractive inclusions.
