Although portable dictaphone recorders first came onto the market in 1957, the quality of the recordings they were capable of simply wasn’t good enough for professional audio recording, meaning that bands had to equip trucks with massive analogue consoles and outboard studio gear in order to make any sort of recording on the move. These trucks were incredibly popular, the most famous being the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio used to record the legendary LP Exile On Main Street, among others. The introduction of the Sony DAT format in the 1980s changed the scene, bringing both digital recording and true portability to the masses. More recently, advances in MiniDiscs, portable hard drives and flash media have enabled portable digital recording devices to be made without resorting to DAT tapes, as well as bringing compatibility for higher sampling rates.
