It’s almost a foregone conclusion these days that at some point in the process of recording music our source analogue signal is going to have the pleasure of a trip through an AD converter. There’s no doubt the proliferation of the DAW and the computer-based system has enabled us to explore a completely new way of working with audio. At the end of the day, however, the quality of our work still relies largely on that all-important conversion of a tiny fluctuating voltage into a string of ones and zeros – and vice versa, for that matter. Apogee is noted for developing top-notch units that facilitate this process and this latest offering looks set to follow that trend. The Mini-Me is a two-channel portable A/D converter and preamp that includes both professional AES/EBU and consumer S/PDIF outputs on its back panel. USB port also enabling you to hook the unit up to a computer and the option of powering the Mini-Me via an external battery pack, it appears that Apogee has come up with a rather good all-rounder.
