AKAI Miniak
Good things can come in small packages – at least, that’s what AKAI aims to prove. Hollin Jones test drives the MINIAK.
Price: £479.00
Manufacturer: AKAI
Website: http://www.akaipro.com

Although best known for its legendary MPC groove samplers and workstations, AKAI has in recent years diversified into making other kit, notably MIDI controllers and drum machines. The MINIAK is its first real foray into the world of synthesizers, developed in association with keyboard specialist Alesis. Visually, it maintains the company’s distinctive black and orange look – functional yet slick. Solid but relatively lightweight, it’s just about small enough to fit into a backpack, but with 37 keys, it’s rather more playable than many portable keyboards.
Score: 8
