As part of its shift into the project studio market, one of SSL’s most intriguing moves has been its acquisition of Sydec – designers and manufacturers of the Soundscape hard disk recording system. Back in the late 90s, Soundscape represented a serious rival to the dominance of Pro Tools, offering a similar combination of dedicated hardware (breakout boxes, integral DSP processing and so on) linked to a PC rather than a Mac. In many ways, Soundscape was (and still is) a great system: rock-solid, easy to use, and with an onboard mixing system that rivalled the power – and low latency – of many dedicated digital audio mixers.
