Back in September 2001, Metric Halo – previously known only for high-quality Macintosh pro-audio software – shipped its first hardware unit, the Mobile I/O 2882. The MIO 2882 was one of the first FireWire interfaces (and the only one that was buss powered) and featured a complete 80-bit digital mixer offering nearly limitless software routing possibilities. In other words, if you needed to make an on-location professional recording, you could simply pack your laptop, MIO 2882 and your microphones and you were ready to go.
