Dave Smith has been a driving force in the music technology world since the 1970s; he’s probably best known for designing the Prophet 5 – the first microprocessor controlled polyphonic synthesizer, released by his old Sequential Circuits company in 1978 – as well as being behind the development of MIDI in the early 80s and the first software synth to run on a PC in the 90s. In the Noughties he’s been making good old-fashioned analogue synths under the name of Dave Smith Instruments.
