Yamaha Motif-Rack
Proving that size isn't everything, Yamaha's new rackmount module offers more polyphony, more patches and more effects than its Motif keyboard counterparts, but are there also compromises? Simon Trask sizes it up…

Yamaha has had plenty of time to decide what form the rackmount version of its Motif sample-based synth workstation range should take since the Motifs 6, 7 and 8 (featuring 61-, 76- and 88-note keyboards respectively) were released well over a year ago. Inevitably, there are compromises to be made to accommodate the rackmount housing, not least in terms of front-panel user interface constraints. Consideration must also have been given to what people expect from a rackmount unit, as opposed to a keyboard, which can involve removing and adding features. But technological progress being what it is, Yamaha has used the intervening time to scale up some of the Motif-Rack’s capabilities significantly, particularly compared to its keyboard counterparts.
