Classic audio equipment often has a DIY look because much of it actually was. Studios regularly knocked stuff up in-house, with even big-name facilities having that home-brew vibe. Some historic companies have maintained that tradition, with molded front panels, LED illuminated valve windows and metering that looks like a firework display being eschewed in favour of utilitarian flat panels, old-fashioned VU meters and industrial switches.
